Arthur Lee RIP

I am saddedend to hear about the death of Arthur Lee, who died yesterday, August 3, at the Methodist University Hospital in his hometown of Memphis after battling leukemia.
I will assume most who read my blog know and are educated about LOVE and Arthur Lee. If not, please DO check out the albums.
I went to see Arthur and LOVE perform "FOREVER CHANGES" at Town Hall, here in NYC a few years ago, with a horn and strings section. It was just incredible. The audience , myself included, were weeping from the beauty and power of the music. I really admired him, as cantakerous, and edgy as ever. It was so great how he was very concerned with NOW, and saw himself as a contemporary, and NOT an oldies act. I tell you, that concert was as fresh and contemporary as anything going on now, maybe even more! So, hats off and many continued thanks to Arthur Lee and LOVE for inspiration and beauty.

THE GUN CLUB report

I just returned from rehearsing with Terry Graham and Ward Dotson for the Gun Club tribute or reunion or whatever you want to call it, that we are doing this Thursday in Los Angeles at the Don't Knock The Rock film festival www.dontknocktherock.com
Thalia Zedek (whom you know from her solo records, and COME and LIVE SKULL before that)
is singing and I am so honered and thrilled and she is doing a most amazing job. Now I am really excited. I can tell you I had some trepidation about doing this at all, it really didn't appeal to me to do a "reunion" with out Jeffrey (which means I figured it "impossible" ) but I have changed my mind. This is really a one off for me, so i plan to enjoy it. The fact that it is in conjunctiion with the debut screening of the Documentary "Ghost On The Highway" By Kurt Voss and I reckoned that in this context, a live show made sense. We are doing 10 songs, all from the first 3 albums, "Fire Of Love" , "Miami", and "The Las Vegas Story"....

NO SHOW TONIGHT

I just realized that the listing for our show tonight is still on my website. sorry, but it was cancelled a while ago, just didn't get it off the page.
In other news, Rickie Lake came into my work the other day and was sweet.
I will be doing the Gun Club tribute thingy at the Don't Knock the Rock film festival in Los Angeles on June 29th at the RED CAT downtown. It is the premiere screening of the Kurt Voss documentary about Jeffrey Lee Pierce and The Gun Club, " Ghost On The Highway." more about that later. Check out www.dontknocktherock.com

Metallic Falcons show.

Hi just got home from playing at the record release party for The Metallic Falcons and had such a great time meeting some new people and seeing some old friends. The show was fun and diverse and was great to be on the somewhat mixed rooster. I was glad they invited me to play. I was happy to see my theremin playing friend Arman Ra playing with the beautiful set by NOMI , and Antony singing with them and with Metallic Falcons, who donned great white cotton long beards. Very beardy weirdy.
I was glad to be asked to play as they just approached me out of the blue and I was intrigued by their image and sound. Turned out to be a great sexually diverse group of performers, and made me glad to be so sexually diverse! I never get asked to do gay things, especially in music, and although this was not a "gay" event, it was the most mixed crowd I have played with in awhile. At least in NYC. Anyways, that's the thought of the moment. I am amped up and in a great mood. Playing with a stripped down crew was satisfying and challenging too. Jack played his French acoustic guitar, John Fell played a snare drum, high hat and wooden block as a kick drum, I played guitar and a few electronic things. The audience looked reall good from the stage... I was and am happy. Good night.

I watched John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982) last night. What a great and scary movie that still is. Do you think that it was a comment on AIDS? I thought that at the time, and thought it again last night. Check it out.
Now I just realized that my blog always seemed to sound like an an ad for whatever i am doing. Sorry about that, i really hate that kind of thing. It is definetly not what i want to do. I just want to make music.

I don't know why I didn't print the lyrics to the songs in the booklet for "Philosophy and Underwear" , so here, I will randomly print the lyrics. Sing along!
The History of French Cuisine (Powers, Martin, O'Brien)

YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU SEEM
YOU, MY DEAR, YOU ARE A DREAM
JUST LIKE THOSE FILMS WE’VE NEVER SEEN
WHERE THE BLUES, THEY CHANGE TO GREEN

YOUR EYES TURN OVER LIKE SCENES
THE PAGES IN A MAGAZINE
“FACES OF BEN VEREEN”
“THE HISTORY OF FRENCH CUISINE”

THE GLUTTONY AND PEACOCKS, THEY PREEN
YOU ARE A VICIOUS QUEEN
THE SUMMER SHADE OF NEW ORLEANS
WHERE THE BLUES, THEY CHANGE TO GREEN

YOUR EYES TURN OVER LIKE SCENES
THE PAGES IN A MAGAZINE
“FACES OF BEN VEREEN”
“THE HISTORY OF FRENCH CUISINE”

A TUNELESS SONG FOR LOVERS TO SING
AND THE KIND OF EYES THAT SEE IN MY DREAMS
WELL YOU ARE NOT AS YOU SEEM
YOU, IN FACT, ARE A DREAM
JUST LIKE THOSE FILMS THAT WE’VE NEVER SEEN
WHERE THE BLUES, THEY CHANGE TO GREEN

YOUR EYES TURN OVER LIKE SCENES
THE PAGES IN A MAGAZINE
“FACES OF BEN VEREEN”
“THE HISTORY OF FRENCH CUISINE”

A TUNELESS SONG FOR LOVERS TO SING
AND THE KIND OF EYES, THEY SEE IN KID CONGO’S DREAMS
I SAID GOOD BYE GOOD BYE
I SAID Au revoir Au revoir
I SAID GOOD BY BY BY BY BY BY BY BY BY
GOOD BYE… GOOD BYE

YELLING IN MY EAR

It Has been awhile since my last posting. In this time I got moved into my new place here in Brooklyn, did a solo gig with Weird War at the Black Cat in DC, drove to and from Austin, Texas, to play 2 shows promoted by Jonathan Toubin for New York Night Train records, and webzine, Went to Easter in the Poconos at Jack Martin's sister's. Kelly AND John's, and been working on setting up a US tour with a new booking agency, Leafy Green, in San Francisco. Well, actually I have worked with the mighty Todd Cote before with Congo Norvell, but am happy and thrilled to be on his roster again in this incarnation. Makes me think of all the changes I have been through in the time from Congo Norvell till now. Wow, has it really been over ten years I have lived in New York without moving? I used to move every two years as a rule. Not even from city to city , but country to country! I came to the realization that I had to stay in one place if I wanted to have some kind of focus. It takes time to create a monster. And patience. har har. I had left the US in '84 citing the re-election of R. Reagan as a protest for some six years I lived in Europe. But look at the political climate now! What a horror! I had kinda guessed that this country would be a dictaorship all those years ago when the right moved in, but it is pretty astonishing to be watching and living in it. Kinda like swimming in shit. Thank god I am in the company of a subculture of friends around the world, who make me believe that all these years of doing exactly what I want and saying what I want, however disparate it may seem at times, is doing the right thing. Speaking of friend and company, It was with regrets that I missed the shindig that Jaqui Pierce threw in Los Angeles, in the memory and ten year anniversary of the death of my compadre, Jeffrey Lee Pierce. I had told Jaqui I would be there in spirit, thank god for astral projection! I hope it went well. I did my own tribute at my record release party at Tonic, when The Pink Monkey Birds backed up Thalia Zedek singing "Mother Of Earth" and "Sex Beat." completely magic! Would love to do more of that with her. It is hard to believe that Jeffrey has been on that other plane so long. I sometimes hear his voice really loud in one of my ears yelling "hi" sometimes. It's pretty weird. I am not asking for any explanation, I just say "hi" back.
The Pink Monkey Birds are looking to tour this summer, probably starting mid July. Keep checking the tour dates at www.kidcongopowers.com
