Heartworm and Mayhem report

The Heartworm #37 event/reading last Saturday in NYC went really well and was lot's of fun. Lot's of great people, on and off stage. It was a freaky family reunion with a lot of friends I rarely see, like Max G. Morton and Wesley Eisold from Heartworm Press/Cold Cave, Little Annie, Kembra Phaler, Howie Pyro, Marti Domination,etc...etc.. I was also happy to finally formally meet Genesis P-Orridge, Boyd Rice (performing as NON), Jonathan Shaw, Eric Paul and Chris Leo. Now THAT is a gathering of the minds! HERE is a review in Time Out NY. Joly from punkcast.com posted a video of my reading HERE.
The following day I Bolted back to DC , caught the Paint Made Flesh exhibit at The Philips Collection and then was driven out to The Nission Pavillion in Virginia to interview drummer extraordinaire Dave Lombardo from Slayer for DC blog Brightest Young Things "Not your average interview " series at The Mayhem Fest! I felt like Bruno walking in there! Dave was a cool guy and answered all the silly questions we asked him, and Slayer was really HEAVY. But it was not lost on me that the night before at Heartworm #37 I had been sitting in a room with real polite Satanists, Magical thinkers, Manson acquaintances , and Gender benders. now THAT was HEAVY!

Kid Congo Powers reading in NYC August 8th.

August 8, 2009, Chronic Youth presents Heartworm Press #37 at Santos Party House in New York City. Featuring the first live performance by NON in many years, and the negative hiss and out-of-body-bliss of supporters Prurient and Cold Cave. What makes this event unique enough to merit a Heartworm catalog number is the fact that all of these death-cheaters and dangerous thinkers will be (somewhat) contained under one roof for the first time. In between the three acts there will be spoken word performances by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu), Kid Congo Powers (The Cramps, Gun Club, Bad Seeds), Chris Leo (The Van Pelt, The Lapse), Eric Paul (Chinese Stars, Arab On Radar) and renowned tattoo artist and underground journalist legend Jonathan Shaw- A man who seeps old New York. and was wolf enough to run with the likes of Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, the Manson Family and Charles Bukowski. This will be Shaw's first reading in New York City.

Rare AS the Yeti Party Podcast

Hi. Here in Washington DC me and my pal Kalani have just started doing a wig wham bam Monday night rockin' DJ party called "Rare as the Yeti" at Local 16 (16th + U streets NW). It's a cuckoo mish mash of freakbeat, Garage, Psychedelic, Soul, 70's Glitter rock, Punk, maybe even funk and whatever other kind of trash we find that makes all our folks happy! You can come and trip the dancefloor, hang out on the roof deck bar, or have some food even! We spin from 10pm to 1am . Here's a podcast of the first week, technical warts and all! Hey, it was the first night! Hope we see you there. Yeti wigs are optional. Local 16 is at 1602 U St NW
Washington, DC 20009

Monday, July 06, 2009

Lot's of Kid stuff News.

Hey everyone. A flurry of activity and plans to report. First, Tonight Monday July 6 at 10pm I am Dj-ing with my pal Kalani at Local 16 for a new record playing night called "Rare as The Yeti". We will be playing vintage soul, garage, freakbeat, 70's glam, funk and punk till 1am or so. Drop on by this opening night for post 4th of July blues breaking.
The LSDC remix contest at Track and Fields is closed and now The Pink Monkey Birds and I will go into deliberations as to whom will be the winner, whom will be featured on our myspace page and on the b-side on one of a series of 7inch 45's we will be recording in October sometime . Some real cuckoo crazies got ahold of the stems and twisted our wigs! Watch this spot next Monday to hear the winning mix. In the meantime you can listen to the mixes at the Track and Fields website and if you sign up, can cast a vote of your own to influence us!
In the works is a
Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds West Coast US tour in the month of October . Hurrah!
ALSO amidst a gaggle of great reviews for our album "Dracula Boots" on INTHERED, we are booking a return European tour in November/December, which WILL include UK dates!
Video artists Rob Parrish and Paris Bustillos are working on a video for the song "Rare as The Yeti". Coming soon!
Our friend from the Spacy Stardust radio show in Frankfurt posted this video of us at Das Bett playing the old Gun Club classic, Sex Beat! What a gas it was!
Also our pal Acid Marshmallow posted a video of almost our entire in-store performance at Permanent Records in Chicago. This special feature includes special guest Jason Ward, whom recorded and mixed Dracula Boots. He also wailed the organ parts on our version of Thee Midniters "I Found a Peanut" and "la Lllarona" and does so here live. The first 5 minutes or so is our "sound check" but then we take off! It was much fun in the most awesome record store.
More news as it comes. best, KCP

NY NIGHT TRAIN INVADES DC! 6/27 SATURDAY!

New York Night Train Happening is the latest spectacular multimedia party of Mr. Jonathan Toubin, the DJ/Conceptualist behind such legendary NYC parties such as Glasslands’ Animal Train Happening and Santos Party House’s
DECLASSIFIED! Yet another step towards the revival and revision of the New York nightlife underground’s proudest and most ambitious tradition, THE HAPPENING is inspired by everything from Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic
Inevitable, which fused lights, projection, live music, performance, and dance under the
same umbrella, to similar examples spanning from the disco to early new wave era in
spaces like Club 57, their New Wave Vaudeville Show, and the Mudd Club.
Past happenings haven’t only seen collaborations with galleries/artists such as Secret Project Robot, Live With Animals, and Mikilandia Productions, and been filmed by the likes of the father of avant-garde cinema, the Factory’s Jonas Mikas, but
have also included appearances by many generations of subcultural icons such as
Genesis P-Orridge, Andrew W.K., Quintron and Ms. Pussycat, King Khan and the BBQ, Ian Svenonius, Calvin Johnson, James Chance, Gibby Haynes, The Slits, Jon Spencer, and many more. Initially conceived as a reaction to, on one hand, the assembly-line ho-hum of rock show presentation, and, on the other, the aesthetic bankruptcy and soul-less nature of the contemporary dance party, Toubin’s happenings have developed into a mighty rock and roll wrecking ball demolishing the
boundaries between art, performance, and nightlife - revealing the pearly disco ball at its core – the best rock dance parties the 21st Century has yet to offer.
This first edition of New York Night Train Happening features live music by Edie Sedgwick, Exactly, Kid Congo Powers (Cramps, Gun Club, Bad Seeds, etc), performance by and go go artist Anna Copa Cabanna and Hula Hoop Harlot Melissa Anne, and live non-digital film projection by Spencer Bewley (Place to Bury Strangers,
Warlocks, Death In Vegas, etc) and DJ sets by Mr. Jonathan Toubin. Expect a participatory spectacle in which all of the performers to play all sorts of roles on and off stage in all sorts of unpredictable configurations (
Melissa, Anna, and Kid collaborating, etc. (!)).
If you think this sounds like a bras d’ honneur in the face of the mediocre, unimaginative, and economically exclusionary day-to-day mechanics of 21st Century art, music, and nightlife in general, you are correct. Now that New York Night Train has sparked a revolution in Empire City shows, dance club nights, and art events, it is now changing
the way people go out around the world – restoring and renovating proud traditional underground aesthetics ... town by town. All aboard!

LUX INTERIOR

LUX INTERIOR
It didnt take more than one look at a photograph of Lux Interior in 1976 to
realize he was a special creature. It didnt take more than witnessing one song of The
Cramps live to realize Lux burned with an uncontainable wildfire within. He was
sexy, funny, and dangerous all at the same time. The rockabilly howler, the
psychedelic seer, the latex and high heels pervert, the late night horror host,
the most exhalted potentate of love, the king of rock and roll. Lux was all
these things and so much more. He possesed the uncanny talent for zeroing in on the absolute
essence and beauty of the wild and weird, be it in records, films, books, photgraphy
or art from all eras past, especially those looking way into the future. His
findings have influenced hundreds of thousands, if not millions. Certainly it
has been stamped on me as a fan and as the guitarist for the Cramps from my
ages of 21 to 23, and continue in my works today.
The last times I saw Lux was in 2006 at one of their last shows in NYC. It
was the best show I had been to in years. The band was cooking and Lux was
brilliantly deranged and hilarious. During the always chaotic rendition of
"Surfin Bird" Lux climbed on the stacked drum monitors, peeking out of a slit in the
long black velvet curtains so that all you saw was his bleached blond head
glowing beautiful and grotesque, I saw the always cool Poison Ivy look up and
start laughing with appreciation and love. At that moment I was incredibly touched and so
thankful for The Cramps. It had been years since I had met up with the band and
backstage Lux kept hugging and kissing me. I was so happy to see them again. A
few months later my band, The Pink Monkey Birds played in Los Angeles and Lux
and Ivy attended and praised the show. Lux was a bit tipsy and very kissy again and
full of love. My sister Barbara was selling our merch and Lux ran behind the
table to greet her after not seeing her for 25 years. What a sweetheart. I remember Lux as glowing.
He commented to me that some of my stage patter could have come from his mouth.
I didnt hesitate to blurt out "I have learned from the best." Lux laughed and
gave me another big hug. That was the last time I saw him. I am honored to have
known the amazing and magical Lux Interior. We miss him already.

AMAZING !

It was amazing to be in Washington DC last night when Obama was pronounced the new President. Me and Ryan were taking a break from the tension of the vote count reports and popped in a DVD of "Witness For The Prosecution" and got lost in that great film when at about 11pm we heard an uproarious collective scream of joy from the streets and we KNEW Barack Obama had won the election. It didn't stop till well into the morning. Today is glorious here. Thank God.

Nick Sanderson R.I.P.

I am deeply saddened by the news that former Gun Club drummer and friend Nick Sanderson passed away earlier this week from lung cancer. I will always remember Nick not only as one of the very best drummers I have played with, but as a hilarious friend with an askew sense of humor that helped keep my sanity on endless tours. My heart goes out to his wife Romi Mori, son Sidney, and all family and friends of Nick. One of these photos is of me and "Sandy" clowning around in Hansa Studios in Berlin during the "Mother Juno" sessions, and the other is a publicity still of the Gun Club from that time as well, with Romi Mori, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Nick Sanderson, and myself. R.I.P. Nick, thanks for all you have contributed to those touched by you.

MOJO review of Ghost on The Highway

Walking with the beast

The Gun Club
****
Ghost On The Highway: A Portrait of Jeffrey Lee Pierce & the Gun Club

French Fan Club Films & Powell Factory Films

Against all odds, the mayhem-packed tragedy of Jeffrey Lee Pierce is told by his long-suffering band-mates. Kris Needs listens and weeps.

There’s never been a proper documentary about the Gun Club, the apocalyptic punk-blues death party started in late-70s Los Angeles by Jeffrey Lee Pierce, who suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage in 1996 at the age of 37. Ghost On The Highway holds no pretensions to be the ultimate record. Director and long-time fan Kurt Voss, converted after witnessing Pierce get a kicking while supporting the Cramps in 1981, unashamedly believes that the group, particularly their doomed leader, are, ‘still in much need of more myth-making…My goal is to proselytize and leave the autopsy report stuff for later’.
This he achieves as band members and friends relate the often harrowing story of the phenomenal talent who exploded into the world with 1981’s seminal Fire Of Love album before embarking on a lifelong drugs ‘n’ booze-fuelled career kamikaze, though still managing to create incandescent masterworks like Miami, The Las Vegas Story and Mother Juno.
Pierce’s savagely-haunting confessionals and narcotic love songs explored America’s dark underbelly hotwired to the eternal artery of the blues. A hopeless romantic, when sober he was an endearingly-passionate sweetheart obsessed with William Burroughs, Blondie and free jazz. Drunk he became a belligerent nightmare, prompting the wrong Jim Morrison comparisons.
Former collaborators Kid Congo Powers, Ward Dotson, Terry Graham, Jim Duckworth and Dee Pop tell their leader’s story with rueful humour, exasperated anger or sometimes tears. Their disparate characters engage throughout the 98 minutes, particularly lifelong friend and Gun Club mainstay Powers, who Pierce taught to play guitar, and long-suffering drummer Graham, who confesses, ‘There were many years I had this recurring dream of hitting him in the face with a golf club’. Over a quarter-century later they smile grimly, even disbelievingly, through tales of wilfully antagonistic gigs, cowardly dismissals and missing money, incredulous that Pierce managed to demolish three Gun Club lineups which could have gone on to much greater things, although still remembering other nights when magic happened.
Light relief occasionally pokes through the foot-shooting: Pierce’s Debbie Harry obsession, marked by his peroxide tresses, was consumated after he hid himself in a shopping trolley to sneak into Blondie’s L.A. hotel in early 1977, earning his appointment as their fan club president. He found solace living in London in the mid-to-late 80s with new partner Romi Mori, adopting her native Japan as his spiritual home [his ashes scattered in Kyoto in 2006]. But it didn’t last and the home stretch of Pierce’s final disintegration is shockingly sad, especially for Kid Congo.
True to the infernal spirit of the Gun Club, Voss’s self-financed ‘love letter’ ran into trouble. After lengthy negotiations with Pierce’s estate to use the first two albums, it emerged he’d sold the rights in 1982 to a company that had just been taken over. By now, Voss had drained his resources, completing the film with benevolent editor Andrew Powell co-producing and nothing left for music. Surprisingly, once accepted this doesn’t seem to matter, the movie telling the story compulsively enough to develop its own engrossing flow [although puzzlingly interrupted midway by Lemmy growling about the music business!].
Henry Rollins, who published Pierce’s autobiography, hails him as ‘totally legendary now’. That the movie can explain why with such limited means is testimony to its success. When the big bucks heavyweights decide to set their sights on the Gun Club, Kurt Voss should get first shot.

GUN CLUB DOCUMENTARY - OUT ON DVD NOW!

Kurt Voss here -- director of "Ghost On The Highway: A Portrait of Jeffrey Lee Pierce and The Gun Club."

Just wanted to let everyone know that the documentary is newly released on DVD.

You'll find the trailer and some clips from the film, as well as profiles of the participants, at our brand-spankin'-new site:

http://www.ghostonthehighway.com

I'm also writing to clarify that the DVD is in fact written in NTSC "region free" format. NTSC is the standard U.S. format -- but the "region free" bit means that most of our friends in Europe and beyond should be able to play it too (but if you have any doubts, please consult the manual for your dvd player!)

We really need help in spreading the word that the documentary is out there, so if you are inclined to help, some banners can be found here to encode into your myspace pages:

Thanks in advance for your help, and for checking out the site!

Best to all, Kurt

French Tour Diary

Paris May 22,07
Well this has been a great trip for seeing my music friends and meeting some new people. The day we left NYC from JFK, our plane was delayed for about 3 hrs, which was no big deal to me (meditation helps!). As I took a seat on the floor against a wall the American Airlines newly made international terminal, whom should I spot but my dear friend, Nels Cline, getting some cash from the ATM next to me. It had been a while since the last time I saw Nels; maybe since the first year he was in Wilco. I was happy to see his lanky body and smiley face. I asked him if life was good and he replied, “life is thriving…” I liked hearing that; it made me feel good inside. Due to that delay at JFK, when we arrived in Brussels we had for sure missed our connecting flight to Lyon. Luckily, American Airlines had already booked us on the next flight, 6 HOURS LATER! We had just been on an overnight flight, not getting much sleep, so I was pretty out of it. As seasoned travelers will know, getting comfy to take a nap at an airport is no easy feat, unless you feel the thought of being shoved into a grand piano is a comfy bed. So what is there to do but wander around and spend money on overpriced food and drinks and Internet access to while away multiple hours? I phoned the promoter to let them know we were re routed but got voicemail. I had been engrossed in reading “Against The Stream” by Noah Levine, but reading was just a mass of blurry lines and headache in my overtired state. Yes, walking around and shopping for things I absolutely did not need seemed to be a good way to pass the hours. Down by the Hermes store, I spotted some hipster musician, tall and thin, with a guitar on his back. He had a similar look to my friend, and collaborator, Khan. At first I thought it WAS Khan, as I knew he had been touring to promote his album, “Who Never Rests”. In my blurry state I surmised it was NOT Khan, and went on waxing philosophical about the evils of Hermes scarves to myself. A bit later I had met up with equally aimless Kiki and out of the corner of my eye I spotted the Khan guy again, this time in the company of a girl. This sighting was out of the corner of my eye, so didn’t pay much attention, as by this time, I had no attention. A second later I heard a singsong “Yoo Hoo” in a familiar French accent. I turned around to realize it was Francoise Cactus, and Bretzel Goring from Stereo Total, friends of mine from Berlin! Now it dawned on me that the familiarity to Khan was a Berlin “look” that made Bretzel remind me of Can. As coincidence seemed to be the mood of the trip so far, it was coincidental that Stereo Total was also killing time with no sleep before returning to Berlin. They had just played the previous evening at Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon, which is where we were headed. It was nice to see them, even for a few minutes, and Francoise said she would cook some “French cuisine” next time I visited Berlin. I will NOT forget that offer! Luckily, by this time, we were both close enough to our respective flights to head to the gates and wait the last hour before departure. I thought to myself, “airports can be THE place to be!”
Arriving in Lyon, we were met by the promoter, Violaine, and driver, Florian. While we waited for the sax player from Violent Femmes to arrive, I told Florian the story of our long wait. As it turns out he had dropped off Stereo Total at the airport that morning and was waiting for us. For hours, before he got word we were delayed. Serendipity continues. We arrive at the hotel and who should be on their way out the door but my friend, Jim Thirwell (Foetus)! He informed us those Kraut rock originals, Cluster, were performing that evening and we made a plan to rendezvous. But wait a second, a phone call in the lobby for me from our beautiful friends, Patrice, Letmiya and Valerie from the great La Feline Bar in Paris! They are in Lyon and want to invite us to dinner. Hell yeah! A plan is made to meet. So, finally, I get to my room, shower, and head out to dinner. After a great dinner I had to call it quits. It had been a long journey and sound check was at 1pm the next afternoon. Being a sensible professional (sic) I hit the sack. Missed Cluster, Jim and others told me it was amazing. The next day bright and early whisked off to sound check and lunch at the festival site. Lyon is beautiful, and from the stage you looked on to the hills with houses and trees. After sound check back to the hotel and napped before dinner and another long long night, as we were going onstage at 3AM! YIKES! Waiting for the rest of the band for dinner we ran into Brian Ritchie from the Violent Femmes, whom I had met way back when they first signed to Slash records in Los Angeles, in my first Gun Club days. He told me he had moved to Tasmania (birthplace of Katy Beale) and we had a mutual friend in Beast of Bourbon’s Spencer P. Jones, everyone’s fave rave and mine. After a great Gastronomy meal, waiting for the van to the festival, I met another friend I hadn’t seen in a million years, F.M. Einheit, otherwise known as Mufti. When I was in the Bad Seeds and he was with Neubauten in the mid Eighties, we both lived in Berlin (West Berlin) and I always found him a warm and welcoming person to know. Many years later, the feeling is exactly the same. I was excited and delighted by seeing him personally and DUG his performance the most. When we arrived at the festival site we ran over to see The Raincoats, one of the “must see” bands on my list. Wow, it was so hot in the room they were playing in, but worth sweating over to see these true originals, sounding fresh and modern and ahead of the game, even the older songs! I always marvel when, without much technical bluster, the bands of the “post punk” still sound so individual and original. It is so much abut the ‘way” they play more than what they play it on! Case in point was the ironical Chicks On Speed, whom was up next. I had delighted in the sarcastic art school student sneer of their first LP, but was not in the mood this night. But the crowd loved ‘em . Then I ran out to the big stage to See The Violent Femmes. Not really being the nostalgic type (or so I tell myself), I was still taken with the songs from their “Hallowed Ground” LP. Maybe I AM nostalgic, or maybe I am just realizing that old songs that people love that we made are just timeless, and that is what works for people. Certainly I loved The Raincoats, dug the Violent Femmes, and still thrill to concerts by The Cramps or Jerry Lee Lewis. Timeless music can still challenge and thrill, even my own material after a while. I have to remember that everyone in the audience is not an old curmudgeon as me! Even curmudgeons can change their mind and melt and give. I guess I learned that giving is NOT pandering. DUH! Please, at my age! So after FM Einheit’s hypnotic set I was ready to finally play at 3 am. France has always been great to all the bands I have been in so it was a good feeling from the time I got onstage until I left. We threw in a lot of “oldies” for this set, and I was glad we did as we were met with screams. Nice end of the evening. I am glad I bought a new suit for the occasion! Next day we checked out of the hotel, said bye to Mufti and headed to catch a train to Lillie, where we would play that evening. As luck would have it, we were traveling on the same train as The Raincoats, in First Class I may add! That was fortunate because We got to meet them and I got to tell them how much I enjoy their music. They are cool folks indeed. At Lille, we bode farewell to The Raincoats and were met by the promoter and taken to the hotel, which was luckily next door to the Venue. This evening we played early, opening for the popular French band Las Wampas. It was great, as we had played so late the night before. Also it was great that they had a super young audience, which was different from my usual peer group age audience. I really felt like a dirty old man, and loved it! Andre Williams-ville here I come! After our set it was good to meet some fans, sexy fans, while I manned the merch stand, although my more “hardcore” fans dismissed Las Wampas, I was glad they came to see and support us! Me, Danny and Kiki hit the hotel early, as we had only slept a few hours and were off to Paris the next day. I thank the promoter and bands that made Lille a cool experience. Wake, coffee at the station, and then a train to Gare Du Nord. Lionel, Sarah Jane and Barbara, and Barbara’s sister with black hair met us. To the hotel, and luckily, it was a day off in Paris. My friend and sometimes collaborator, Julee Cruise with Pluramon, was performing that evening at a David Lynch visual art exhibition at the Foundation Cartier, I had been in touch with Marcus from Pluramon via Myspace and luckily scored one ticket to this most coveted special event. I had not seen Julee or Marcus since the three of us performed at my record release / 25 year recording anniversary party at the dearly departed Tonic in NYC last year. Usually held in an outdoor garden setting, the show was delayed and moved indoors due to rain. I was happy they didn’t cancel. But this meant waiting outdoors in the rain for over an hour. Luckily, I brought an umbrella, and more luckily I ran into Fred whom had been at the Lyon festival, and he gave me a place in line. Also ran into Pascal from Le Vueve Electro, a friend from the past years. When Khan and me first met Pascal, he looked and dressed exactly like Fassbinder! While waiting, who should walk right up thru the crowd but David Lynch himself! Everyone was surprised and dumbstruck, so unbelieving what they were seeing, as he nonchalantly got to the entrance gate, the crowd broke into polite applause. Suddenly the rain stopped and everything and everyone took on a surreal quality. Funny how his suggestion is so ingrained in our psyches that you are suddenly thrust into his world, just by seeing him walk by! I don’t take drugs or drink anymore, so this kind of “tripping” is always welcome, just like his films! Finally, we are let in the downstairs gallery of the exhibition where Julie and Phramon will perform in a theater in “Eraserhead.” How perfect was this going to be seeing Julee Cruise sing n a David Lynch theater set with David Lynch sitting in the front row? Well, it was fantastic. They did an entire set of Pluramon/Julee songs, which sounded fantastic in this small room. Julee played my favorite neurotic, extreme characters I have grown to love since playing with her in our “Khan” years. I dug the Phramon songs very much. I was also impressed that they saved “Falling” and “The World Spins” for the encore. People were freaking out!! Tears and Goosebumps through the room. I caught up with Julee and we had a love-fest of friend and comradereship-ness. As we caught up on personal stuff she told me that it was the first time DL had come to see her sing. Then I knew I had witness a both special and historic night for Julee, and David Lynch! All of us (me, Julee and Pascal) assumed David had “left the building” as he was whisked away at the last note of the set. But just as we said that an aid said “David is in the next room, come say hello.” It was great to see he and Julee reunite for this night. Also it was great to be introduced to David Lynch and shake hands. He has a warm eye-to-eye greeting. I can tell he is a mediator, certain calmness. I have recently taken up meditation myself and whish I had started years ago – what a difference it makes. Anyways meeting David Lynch was COOL! Pascal got an autograph and we left to let Julee catch up in private. Thanks Julee, Marcus and Phramon. Can you believe none of us had a camera?
After me and Pascal went back to LA Feline to wind down, but all our band and friends had gone home. It was Sunday night, our friends had got back from Lyon, and so I don’t blame them. In the bar across the street we ran into a few people I had met the last time we played and I watched them all get drunk while I drank Perrier. Then to the hotel to sleep. The next day, Monday, was filled with eating and shopping. A lot of the galleries were closed on Mondays, so I didn’t get to see any art. After the souncheck Kiki and me bought jeans and tripped around the area, on bridges and generally ate and stopped at cafes for coffee. The show was fun again at Le Club. Blutt, featuring our friend Baldo, opened the show. I met great people, Randy Kaye’s sister Kourtney, and cool band guys. I recognized lots of folks from our last show at La Feline last December. For a Monday night, it was a cool, intimate turnout. The DJ was great, whoever it was; I didn’t get a chance to tell him. Thoroughly wiped out, I called it an early evening. Maybe it was late! The next morning we had a last band breakfast and me and Kiki went to the David Lynch exhibit and freaked out. Fun. Danny stayed on for the holidays in Switzerland and Kiki and me flew back to NYC where I caught a train to DC (made it!) and Kiki to a flight to Austin, TX (did he make it?). More on that next blog….

Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds "Philosophy and Underwear" (New York Night Train Records) 4 stars
Starting his recording career at the dawn of the 80's, Kid Congo Powers
sidestepped the prevailing shallowness of that
decade to appear on some of the finest records of that era- The Cramps
"Psychedelic Jungle" and "The Smell of Female", Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds "Tender Prey"
"The Good Son" and Barry Adamson's "Moss Side Story" to name a few.
This latest addition to his discography easlily lives up to that pedigree.
Songs such as "The Last Word" with superbly discordant guitars and anguished vocals, call to mind the first Voidoids
album, whilst JOHNNY could be Blitzkreig Bop put thru a blender and sung down a telephone.
Most of the lyrics on these songs wouldn't have disgraced even the most laconic
of Warhol's Factory hands "It's the weather, it's the war/ I'm confused, I'm a whore." MOJO music magazine

Recently back from a mind boggling, wig twisting US and European Tour, KCP&PMB's (Kid:Guitar/voice, Kiki Solis:(Knife in the Water, Rhythm of Black Lines)on Bass, and Danny Hole (Nikki Sudden, The Warlocks.) on Drums, finally play a proper NYC show! Songs from Kid's past (Gun Club) and present will be in the set! Will have CD's, some vinyl, and t-shirts from the tour for sale.

Int'l Shades was formed in 2003 by legendary underground
musicians, drummer Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Knoxville Girls)
and Mark C ( Live Skull, Spoiler) guitar and vocals. Bob and Mark are
joined by Tim Foljahn (Two Dollar Guitar, Cat Power, Half Japanese) on bass and vocals,
and Alexa Wilding (Dumbo's star singer songwriter) on vocals and synthesizer.
Their first release, Hash Wednesday, is available on colored vinyl and cd on Cass Records.

The Big Takeover says, "Int'l Shades play appealing post-punk pop that's as light as it is dark.
This isn't nostalgia, this is fresh."

Thrill Jockey recording artist Thalia Zedek, in a newly expanded 5 piece band featuring Winston
Bramen, Daniel Coughlin, David Michael Curry, and Mel Lederman, will be playing brand new material, along
with the usual original chesnu

Arthur Lee RIP

I am saddedend to hear about the death of Arthur Lee, who died yesterday, August 3, at the Methodist University Hospital in his hometown of Memphis after battling leukemia.
I will assume most who read my blog know and are educated about LOVE and Arthur Lee. If not, please DO check out the albums.
I went to see Arthur and LOVE perform "FOREVER CHANGES" at Town Hall, here in NYC a few years ago, with a horn and strings section. It was just incredible. The audience , myself included, were weeping from the beauty and power of the music. I really admired him, as cantakerous, and edgy as ever. It was so great how he was very concerned with NOW, and saw himself as a contemporary, and NOT an oldies act. I tell you, that concert was as fresh and contemporary as anything going on now, maybe even more! So, hats off and many continued thanks to Arthur Lee and LOVE for inspiration and beauty.

THE GUN CLUB report

I just returned from rehearsing with Terry Graham and Ward Dotson for the Gun Club tribute or reunion or whatever you want to call it, that we are doing this Thursday in Los Angeles at the Don't Knock The Rock film festival www.dontknocktherock.com
Thalia Zedek (whom you know from her solo records, and COME and LIVE SKULL before that)
is singing and I am so honered and thrilled and she is doing a most amazing job. Now I am really excited. I can tell you I had some trepidation about doing this at all, it really didn't appeal to me to do a "reunion" with out Jeffrey (which means I figured it "impossible" ) but I have changed my mind. This is really a one off for me, so i plan to enjoy it. The fact that it is in conjunctiion with the debut screening of the Documentary "Ghost On The Highway" By Kurt Voss and I reckoned that in this context, a live show made sense. We are doing 10 songs, all from the first 3 albums, "Fire Of Love" , "Miami", and "The Las Vegas Story"....

NO SHOW TONIGHT

I just realized that the listing for our show tonight is still on my website. sorry, but it was cancelled a while ago, just didn't get it off the page.
In other news, Rickie Lake came into my work the other day and was sweet.
I will be doing the Gun Club tribute thingy at the Don't Knock the Rock film festival in Los Angeles on June 29th at the RED CAT downtown. It is the premiere screening of the Kurt Voss documentary about Jeffrey Lee Pierce and The Gun Club, " Ghost On The Highway." more about that later. Check out www.dontknocktherock.com

Metallic Falcons show.

Hi just got home from playing at the record release party for The Metallic Falcons and had such a great time meeting some new people and seeing some old friends. The show was fun and diverse and was great to be on the somewhat mixed rooster. I was glad they invited me to play. I was happy to see my theremin playing friend Arman Ra playing with the beautiful set by NOMI , and Antony singing with them and with Metallic Falcons, who donned great white cotton long beards. Very beardy weirdy.
I was glad to be asked to play as they just approached me out of the blue and I was intrigued by their image and sound. Turned out to be a great sexually diverse group of performers, and made me glad to be so sexually diverse! I never get asked to do gay things, especially in music, and although this was not a "gay" event, it was the most mixed crowd I have played with in awhile. At least in NYC. Anyways, that's the thought of the moment. I am amped up and in a great mood. Playing with a stripped down crew was satisfying and challenging too. Jack played his French acoustic guitar, John Fell played a snare drum, high hat and wooden block as a kick drum, I played guitar and a few electronic things. The audience looked reall good from the stage... I was and am happy. Good night.
